Motion Control – LM76 OSG 40 Rails and Roller Blocks Used in New Seaport Container Scanner!

Motion Control System

Motion Control System

Motion Control – Linear Motion — “On January 4, 2007, Congress passed the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act. Included in the bill’s provisions was a mandate that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) scan 100 percent of maritime cargo entering the United States by 2012. Given the fact that approximately 11.6 million cargo containers enter U.S. ports each year, this mandate could cripple the ability of the private sector to move goods on time.” The mandate is to deploy a system that can rapidly scan containers without creating bottle necks. This system is now available.

One of the critical aspects of this new scanner design is the motion control linear rail and roller block system that allows the 2000 pound detector to move vertically. LM76 was chosen to engineer this aspect of the new container system which is now being deployed at port terminals. Mike Quinn of LM76 had this to say about the challenges LM76 faced: “There were several challenges we had to overcome – none more pressing than the ability to stand-up to the salt air/spray environment. We had to take a linear motion  system that is not all-weather and make it all-weather. Not easy when you have sealed rollers that are steel running on a steel shaft. We had to choose a motion control system that would offer low friction, tolerate contamination and not rust away. Looking over all our products, we chose the OSG roller Block/Rail assembly as our base linear motion system:http://www.lm76.com/speed_rail_osg.htm

According to company President John Tarbell: “Each rail is 24 feet long and poses it’s own challenges. We did not want to butt joint rails because the mounting surface is less than flat. If we employed rails that required butt joining – due to the overall length of the rails – we could experience very rough transition points that could negatively affect the life of the bearing block rollers. The LM76 OSG system allows us to construct almost unlimited rail lengths.”

Motion Control - Linear Motion Block

As shown, the OSG rail is a two piece rail that allows you to stagger shafting from 1 section to another so you can avoid butt joining. This makes for very clean transitions from rail to rail.
Next, to protect the shaft from corrosion, we used a special anti-corrosion treatment – Stay-Tough LM 12:

Resulting properties from these chemical and structural composition changes are increased
surface hardness, lower coefficient of friction, enhanced surface lubricity, improved running wear performance, increased sliding wear resistance, and enhanced corrosion resistance.

Next, to protect the rollers from corrosion we chose an enhanced surface treatment that encapsulated the roller, pin and the sealed bearings inside.

The 2000 pound scanner package is raised and lowered via a steel cable. Thus, the OSG linear system does not experience the load directly. The OSG bearings act more as linear guidance for the scanner as it moves throughout its travel.

The original beta system has been in operation for over a year without issue.

Motion Control – Compact, High Resolution Resonant Scanner Features Wide Frequency Range and Fully Integrated Control & Drive Electronics!

Equipment Solutions Motion Control Resonant Scanner

Equipment Soultions

Sunnyvale, CA, — The RS-25 Resonant Scanner from Equipment Solutions is optimized for applications that typically require a means to scan an optical beam. This motion control resonant scanner is a very efficient means of oscillating or vibrating a mirror or similar load at a fixed frequency. Up to a 25 mm diameter mirror can be set at the factory to oscillate at a fixed frequency of 20 Hz to 550 Hz, and mirror sweep can be adjusted to a total of 90 degrees optical. The very compact RS-25 Resonant Scanner measurers just 25 x 58 x 21 mm and all electronics necessary to control and drive the scanner are fully integrated. Typical applications include: 3D laser digitizing & measurement, printing, raster scanners, laser projectors, laser marking, laser range finding, barcode scanning, confocal microscopy, FLIR, retinal image acquisition, semiconductor inspection, laser tuning, and biological and medical research.

The RS-25 Resonant Scanner can optionally be configured with a very high-resolution position sensor. This non-contact electro-optic sensor provides a means to directly monitor the angular position of the user’s load with micro-radian scale resolution and repeatability. The sensor naturally produces an analog signal proportional to position and is noise limited, however, options include a high-resolution 16-bit Analog-to-Digital converter to quickly sample and report the mirror position (up to 1500 samples-per-second) at any time.

Unparalleled performance and reliability have been achieved through a continuous and careful attention to every design detail. This relentless drive has generated patent pending concepts and ideas that distinguish the RS-25 Resonant Scanner. The RS-25 Resonant Scanner has a virtually unlimited life. Carefully designed flexures mimic a conventional spring-mass harmonic motion system, and a small voice coil motor coupled to the system compensates for small system loses that would otherwise dampen the oscillation.

Two connectors are accessible from the side of the unit. One, a mini USB connector, supports high speed USB communications and power sourcing. The second connector provides electrical control and signal interfaces (e.g. analog amplitude control and feedback (e.g.) mirror position).

Additional features include: Very low power drive electronics (low heat emission), vertical or horizontal mounting, high frequency stability (to 0.05%), broad frequency selection, no wearing parts, shock and vibration tolerant.

Motion Control – LFA-3404 Linear Focus Actuator

Motion Control

The LFA-3404 Linear Focus Actuator is a high performance compact positioning system. It was specifically developed for optical applications requiring both high precision and high-speed positioning over a short to medium stroke. The motion control LFA-3404 is well suited for optical focusing and other micropositioning applications such as scanning interferometry, surface structure analysis, disk drive testing, autofocus systems, confocal microscopy, bio-technology, semiconductor test equipment. Note that this motor is normally configured with an analog position feedback sensor and can be optionally equipped with a digital quadrature feedback element. The key to this products immense success is its novel tubular architecture. This arrangement provides a means to send the optical path directly through the middle of the motor. The moving optic attached to the motors ‘C-mount’ is not cantilevered and so has no torques. By design, the LFA-3404 Linear Focus Actuator rotates approximately 0.1 degrees or 1.7 milliradians for every 1 millimeter of translation. Product manufacturing tolerances are closely monitored so that both lateral and angular displacements about the motion axis are as small as possible.
