Motion Control – Closed-Loop Integrated Stepper Motors in size NEMA34
August 20th, 2016
Editor

| 100% Automatic Setup | No need to adjust any parameters. JVL closed-loop stepper motors always work fast and efficient to adapt motor to application. Extremely high update frequency: 36 MHz (where other suppliers have down to only 1 Hz update time). Calculations are made in FPGA and not in slow microprocessors. |
| Energy Saving | Like servo motors QuickStep always runs at lowest possible current. This reduces the need for cooling and results in a more “green” solution. |
| Stall-Free Operation And No Losing Of Steps | By always monitoring the actual rotor position, the control algorithm ensures that the motor does not lose any steps and it cannot stall. If the rotor is blocked mechanically it just continues right away when the obstruction is removed. |
| Torque Control Mode | The torque can be adjusted “on the fly” by the user or by the motor’s embedded PLC program. Applications that were previously impossible for a stepper motor can now be achieved. |
| Higher Acceleration & Speed | Stall-free operation means you do not need to worry about setting the motor to a very high acceleration ramp. The motor simply moves the load with the highest possible acceleration at any given time. The result is a much faster machine with more cycles per day. |
| Factory Loaded Linearization | The motor and encoder are calibrated during factory production in order to reach a very high mechanical precision. |
| Older Motors Are Supported | The Closed-loop control mode is backward compatible with older motors equipped with H2-type encoders. By updating the firmware, the user’s application can benefit from the stall-free operation with very high accelerations and lower power consumption. |
| Full Torque Available | The motor is capable of using the full torque according to the torque-velocity curve and therefore the need to have a safety overhead when dimensioning the machine is much less. Smaller motor = lower costs. |
- Position feedback and control
- Fast and easy commissioning. No tuning needed
- No stalling. No step losses at all
- Torque control
- Much faster positioning and more cycles per second
- Increased efficiency and thereby much lower temperature
- Shorter settling time
- Controls higher inertias than open loop steppers
- Higher load tolerance
- More quiet operation (lower acoustic noise)
- Longer lifetime due to lower temperature
- Correct positioning without overshoot and oscillation
- Very high Torque at low speed. Often 3-4 times higher in same motor flange size
- Very high ratio-of-inertia, often up to 40:1
- Faster commissioning. No tuning needed
- Lower price. Same price as open loop steppers
- Totally stiff at standstill. Full holding torque
- Direct drive without gearbox (better and more precise torque control)
- Correct positioning without overshoot
- No oscillation
- Very short settling time
- Multiple axis applications (RS485, CANopen)
- Industrial Ethernet: Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Powerlink, Modbus TCP, SERCOS III
- Positioning tasks with load changes
- Winding applications
- Belt drives (start/stop, positioning)
- Dosing pumps and filler systems
- Semi-conductor mounting
- Wafer production
- Textile machines and industrial sewing machines
- Robotics
- Testing and inspection systems
- Applications that require quiet operation, short settling times and precision positioning
JVL’s wide selection of quality products for motion control applications include: Integrated brushless Servo motors, Integrated Stepper motors, AC Servo motor controllers, Motor drivers (DC, AC and Steppers), Brakes, Gear boxes and HMI touch panels.

Motion Control – Portescap’s 16mm Athlonix DC Miniature Motor Features Energy Efficient Coreless Design!
July 7th, 2016
Editor

![]() |
West Chester, PA — Motion Control — Portescap introduces the next frame size in the DCP range of Athlonix™ high power density brush DC mini motors. Athlonix DCP motors offer an optimized price-to-performance solution ideal for a broad spectrum of applications. Available in a 16 mm diameter, the new 16DCP motor features an energy efficient coreless design with an optimized self-supporting coil and magnetic circuit, which ensures optimum price-to-performance is delivered.
Athlonix 16DCP motors are available in 2 variations, precious metal commutation and graphite commutation, both featuring an Alnico magnet inside. The unique constant force spring design for carbon brush ensures consistent performance. An REE (Restriction of Electro Erosion) coil is an available option, which ensures extended life of the motor and provides an environment of intrinsic safety especially at high speed conditions.
With maximum continuous torque up to 2.63 mNm and higher stall torque than similar motors, Athlonix 16DCP motors are ideally suited for use in applications such as medical & industrial pumps, gas analyzers, security & access, power tools, mesotherapy guns and tattoo machines.
“Athlonix motors are powered by a proprietary self-supporting coil resulting into maximized magnetic flux and ampere-turns for a given diameter” says Sunil Kumar, Brush DC Product Line Manager at Portescap. “In contrast, typical self-supporting coils have inherent ampere-turns limitations that affect the magnetic flux density in the magnetic circuit, which further limits power output and endurance of the motor,” he says.
“Due to lower motor regulation factor compared to comparable motors available in the market, our new 16DCP has higher load carrying capacity at minimum reduction in speed leading to more uniform power” says Sunil Kumar.
Athlonix motors are available with encoders and gearheads of various sizes and ratios. They are manufactured in an ISO certified facility and are RoHS compliant.
Portescap offers the broadest miniature and specialty motor products in the industry, encompassing coreless brush DC, brushless DC, stepper can stack, digital linear actuators, and disc magnet technologies. Portescap products have been serving diverse motion control needs in wide spectrum of medical and industrial applications – medical, life science, instrumentation, automation, aerospace and commercial applications, for more than 70 years.
Portescap has manufacturing centers in the United States, St. Kitts, and India, and utilizes a Global Product Development network with research and development centers in the United States, China, India, and Switzerland.
Comprehensive documentation and software are included with every delivery, and are also available for you to download from our website atwww.portescap.com.

Motion Control Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Position Actuators!
May 2nd, 2016
Editor
Motion Control – Akribis Systems Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Position Actuators Available from Electromate!
![]() |
Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – A “voice coil” is a generalized term that refers to any galvanometer-like mechanism that uses a solenoid to move an object back-and-forth within a magnetic field.
Voice coil actuators, or non-commutated DC linear actuators, consist of a permanent magnetic field assembly (permanent magnets and ferrous steel) and a coil assembly. The current flowing through the coil assembly interacts with the permanent magnetic field and generates a force vector perpendicular to the direction of the current. The force vector can be reversed by changing the polarity of current flowing through the coil.
Voice coil actuators are typically used in focusing applications, oscillatory systems, mirror tilting, and miniature position control.
Electromate offers a full family of Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Modules from Akribis Systems. Features include:
- Direct drive, zero cogging, and zero backlash
- Low coil mass with very fast response and bandwidth
- No contact between coil and core movement (no wear and tear)
- Cylindrical or rectangular shape
- A variety of Voice Coil Motors and Voice Coil Modules (Position Actuators)
- Smooth motion at low speeds with limitless resolution (depends on feedback device)
