The Engineering Edge – Special Custom Machined Linear Shafting

Motion Control – Custom Machined Linear Shafting

New Harmonic Drive FHA-C Mini 24V Servo Actuator with Dual Absolute Encoder and Panel Mount connectors!

Motion Control – Harmonic Drive  Servo Actuator

motion control harmonic drive servo actuator

motion control - electromateVaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components — Introducing Dual Absolute encoder versions of the FHA-C mini actuator. Featuring BiSS-C Harmonic Drive fha-24v-002bi-directional communication for both encoders. The dual encoders are incorporated in essentially the same package size as the long-standing FHA-C mini single incremental encoder version. Without increasing the size, the dual absolute encoder offers single turn absolute position at the output, without the need for battery back-up. Panel mount connectors come standard, and customers can choose between 4 exit options.

The FHA-C mini Series is a family of extremely compact actuators that deliver high torque with exceptional accuracy and repeatability. The actuator combines a high precision Harmonic Drive® gear component with a pancake brushless servo motor. A single turn 14 bit (16384 cpr) gear output encoder has been integrated along with a single turn 14 bit (16384 cpr) motor input encoder providing a true absolute encoder that does not require a battery within 360° of rotation of the output. Typical multi-turn encoders monitoring the motor input shaft require a battery to store the current position when power is lost to the system; however, the dual absolute encoder overcomes this need. In other words, No Battery Required. When power is restored the actuator knows its position.

Features include:

  • Zero backlash
  • Incremental, Absolute or Dual Absolute Encoder
  • 24VDC winding
  • High-torque/weight and torque/volume ratio
  • Optional flex-rated cables with sealed connectors

Information on the FHA-C mini actuator from Harmonic Drive can be viewed at: https://www.electromate.com/assets/catalog-library/pdfs/harmonic-drive/harmonic-drive-fha-mini-24vdc-specsheet.pdf

Motion Control – Compact, High Resolution Resonant Scanner Features Wide Frequency Range and Fully Integrated Control & Drive Electronics!

Motion Control – Resonant Scanner

motion control resonant scanner

Equipment Soultions

Forestville, CA — The RS-25 Resonant Scanner from Equipment Solutions is optimized for applications that typically require a means to scan an optical beam. This motion control resonant scanner is a very efficient means of oscillating or vibrating a mirror or similar load at a fixed frequency. Up to a 25 mm diameter mirror can be set at the factory to oscillate at a fixed frequency of 20 Hz to 550 Hz, and mirror sweep can be adjusted to a total of 90 degrees optical. The very compact RS-25 Resonant Scanner measurers just 25 x 58 x 21 mm and all electronics necessary to control and drive the scanner are fully integrated. Typical applications include: 3D laser digitizing & measurement, printing, raster scanners, laser projectors, laser marking, laser range finding, barcode scanning, confocal microscopy, FLIR, retinal image acquisition, semiconductor inspection, laser tuning, and biological and medical research.

The RS-25 Resonant Scanner can optionally be configured with a very high-resolution position sensor. This non-contact electro-optic sensor provides a means to directly monitor the angular position of the user’s load with micro-radian scale resolution and repeatability. The sensor naturally produces an analog signal proportional to position and is noise limited, however, options include a high-resolution 16-bit Analog-to-Digital converter to quickly sample and report the mirror position (up to 1500 samples-per-second) at any time.

Unparalleled performance and reliability have been achieved through a continuous and careful attention to every design detail. This relentless drive has generated patent pending concepts and ideas that distinguish the RS-25 Resonant Scanner. The RS-25 Resonant Scanner has a virtually unlimited life. Carefully designed flexures mimic a conventional spring-mass harmonic motion system, and a small voice coil motor coupled to the system compensates for small system loses that would otherwise dampen the oscillation.

Two connectors are accessible from the side of the unit. One, a mini USB connector, supports high speed USB communications and power sourcing. The second connector provides electrical control and signal interfaces (e.g. analog amplitude control and feedback (e.g.) mirror position).

Additional features include: Very low power drive electronics (low heat emission), vertical or horizontal mounting, high frequency stability (to 0.05%), broad frequency selection, no wearing parts, shock and vibration tolerant.

Equipment Solutions, Inc. (ESI) is a provider of engineering and manufacturing services. Motion Control – Precisely Measure Curvature and Angles with New Dual-axis Pitch and Roll Stages!

Motion Control – Dual-axis Pitch and Roll Stages!

motion control | Pitch-and-Roll StageVan Nuys, CA – Motion Control – The precise measurements of angles and the curvature of objects are easily determined using two new Pitch and Roll stages just introduced by OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.). The PR100-45-01 (pictured) is driven by stepper motors and the PR100-45-02 is driven by brushless servo motors with quadrature incremental optical encoders.

motion control - OES

The Pitch axis (lower stage) is a high precision goniometer stage which features preloaded cross roller guides and a high ratio worm drive for smooth motion over a range of travel of +/- 45 degrees. It has a typical accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/- 0.01 degrees. Additionally, this axis has end-of-travel limit switches.

The 100 mm diameter Roll axis (upper stage) has a 180:1 gear ratio for smooth motion and has a precise pattern of threaded holes for fixtures or tooling. This axis has an accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/-  0.01 degrees. The Roll axis has a Home signal for initialization. Each axis features a calibrated scale to visually display the angle. The maximum speed with stepper motors is 14 degrees/second and 45 degrees/second with servo motors.  The knobs of the stepper motors can be replaced with optional optical encoders for position verification.

The resolution of the PR100-45-01 stepper motor driven duel-axis stage depends on the resolution of the step motor driver resolution or the optical encoder if a servo motor is used. A resolution of 0.001 degrees equivalent to 3.6 arc-sec can be achieved using a10 micro-steps per step stepper motor driver or an encoder with a resolution of 500 cycles per revolution.

The PR100-45-02 that features servo motors and optical quadrature encoders are used for very precise closed loop operation and greater speeds. The PR100-45-01 and -02 stages can be ordered plug-and-play with a fully a compatible multi-axis motion controller from OES.

Motion Control – Use FDA Compliant Off-the-Shelf Linear Motion Components!

Motion Control – FDA Compliant Components

To: OEMs “Tooling Up” for Urgently Needed Medical Products! Use FDA Compliant Off-the-Shelf Linear Motion Components!

motion control FDA compliant components

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA — Motion Control Components – Linear Motion – In dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic many companies have volunteered or been requested to produce urgently needed medical products such as: Masks, gowns, and ventilators. “Tooling Up” quickly to produce medical grade products for some companies can bring challenges. In addition to needing FDA compliant materials that will be used in the actual masks, gowns, and ventilators, the tooling used to manufacture these products may also need to meet FDA compliance standards. Depending on the product being manufactured, the tooling may need to be: Washed down using caustic chemicals, cleaned with high pressure steam, or sterilized with high Intensity Ultra Violet light or radiation.

Ordering custom FDA compliant linear motion slides and XYZ stages can result in long delays. As an alternative, many companies have linear motion slides in stock for immediate delivery, however, they may not be FDA compliant. In many cases it is the bearings that are not in compliance. LM76 manufactures several types of FDA compliant linear bearings and pillow blocks that are drop-in-replacements for existing bearings. FDA compliant bearings and pillow blocks from LM76 will not trap contaminating debris and can be thoroughly sanitized following Sanitation StandardOperating Procedures (SSOPs). SSOPs are detailed schedules and procedures specifying what to clean, how to clean, how often to clean, and the record keeping used for monitoring.

A helpful component selection guide from LM76, “Linear Bearings, 6 Simple Steps – FDA Compliance, Wash Down Compliance,” details the linear motion components available from LM76 that are FDA/UDSA/3A-Dairy compliant. Included are: Foodstream electroless nickel plated pillow blocks, PTFE lined stainless steel bearings, ceramic coated linear bearings, self-aligning corrosion resistant linear ball bearings, and Thomson® Super SmartTM corrosion resistant, self-aligning, high load linear ball bearings, and solid ETX pillow block/bearings. Shafting to compliment the type of bearing selected includes: Class L Stainless 303/304/316, 440C case hardened stainless, Rc 60 case hardened steel with an Armoloy coating and also Rc78 Class L for enhanced hardness and wear resistance. End blocks and shaft supports that have a ceramic or electroless nickel coating are also available, as well as new ETX Scraper Seals that prevents intrusion of contaminates adding another line of defense.

LM76 also designs and custom builds linear slides from Stainless Steel and other FDA wash down compliant materials.

Motion Control Application – How Would You Position Components Of An Experimental Reactor Vessel Weighing 33 Tons?

Motion Control – Linear Motion Application

motion control - engineering edge
Motion Control Application – Positioning a 33 tom Reactor vessel is Easy …

… Using Custom made LM76 Jet Rail Bearings and Shafting!

When a privately funded research company was ready to move from their original Proof of Concept to a sustainable fusion reactor to produce clean sustainable energy, they realized that extremely heavy components would need to be assembled and disassembled and reassembled again for design modifications and maintenance. The completed assembly would be the length of two buses and easy alignment of the individual components would be critical.

motion control application - Linear Bearings

The main reactor, the fusion containment chamber that is capable of containing a plasma medium of 10 to 15 million degrees is made of non-magnetic stainless steel as are many of the components. The Plasma Medium could be described as a football shaped blob about 1 meter in diameter by 2 meters long. The plasma medium is injected from each end of the reactor assembly by Plasma Guns.

In addition to supporting the weight of the components, the bearings selected to move these massive loads during the construction and testing of the fusion reactor would have to be non-magnetic. Working with engineers, LM76 developed a custom 3 inch Jet Rail Bearing designed to carry both the weight of the fusion reactor and the high energy particle generators. In addition LM76 supplied precision ground, 3 inch 303 stainless steel (non-magnetic) shafting.

The custom manufactured Jet Rail Roller Blocks and 303 stainless steel shafting simplified the assembly/disassembly of the fusion containment chamber and components while ensuring critical alignment throughout travel.

This breakthrough fusion reactor is still in the experimental stage. A commercially viable reactor would need to contain 100 million degrees. Why is the project so important? Because in addition to producing sustainable energy, its only by-product is, environmentally safe, “helium ash.”.

Motion Control – IncOder™ Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex available from Electromate!

Motion Control – Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex!

motion control encoders

motion control - electromateVaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – Zettlex position sensors (IncOders) use non-contact, inductive technology for precision angle measurement. Rather than the bulky transformers of traditional inductive sensors, Zettlex sensors use printed circuits. This enables compact, accurate, lightweight and robust position sensors with no contacts, no delicate parts, no maintenance, no hassle – just accurate measurements – all day, every day. IncOders are ideally suited to harsh environments – where potentiometers, optical or capacitive devices may prove unreliable.

IncOders have 2 main parts – a Stator and a Rotor – each shaped like a flat ring. The large bore makes it easy to accommodate through-shafts, slip-rings, optical-fibres, pipes or cables. The Stator is powered and the Rotor is passive. The Stator contains the electronics to receive power and generate an output signal. The output signal from the Stator shows the true absolute angular position of the Rotor relative to the Stator without the need of any motion.

IncOder inductive angle encoders do not require compliant or special couplings and the Rotor & Stator can simply be screwed to the host product. Precise mechanical mounting is not required and there are no bearings. Whereas optical or capacitive angle encoders can be unreliable in harsh conditions – notably with condensation or dust – Zettlex angle encoders are generally unaffected by foreign matter and IP67 rated versions are available. Unlike capacitive devices, there is no need to earth the Rotor or Stator. Robust, hard-anodized aluminium alloy housings and monolithic constructions are used throughout. There are no contacting, delicate or wearing parts, so there is no need for periodic replacement, service or maintenance. In other words, IncOder angle encoders are true ‘fit and forget’ devices.

Features include:

  • Robust Angular Position Measurement for Extreme Environments
  • High-reliability Inductive Angle Encoder Technology
  • Simple installation; ‘fit and forget’ technology
  • Non-contact technology for high reliability in extreme environments
  • Proven in Aerospace, Defense, Medical & Industrial applications
  • Over 4 million product configuration options available
