Taunton, MA — Maxon Group of Taunton, MA has hired John Uzzolino to head up the business development activities for the Parvalux product line in the United States. In December, Maxon Group acquired the British geared motor manufacturer Parvalux Electric Motor, Ltd. (For additional information Click Here)The acquisition expands the maxon portfolio with DC drives in the power range of up to 1.5 kW, as well as an attractive expansion of maxon group’s already broad motor and motion control portfolio including AC Motors and Worm gearboxes. The acquisition and the addition of Mr. Uzzolino to the team demonstrates maxon group’s continuing commitment to becoming a provider of complete systems. Ultimately, the acquisition opens interesting new markets requiring larger drives and motion systems such as patient handling within the medical technology sector (stair lifts, electric wheelchairs, etc.) and industrial applications (robotics and transport systems, conveyors).

John Uzzolino comes to maxon Group with 20 years’ of experience in industrial motion control and mechatronics applications. John started his career as a Sales Engineer working with a high tech distribution company, focusing on solving motion control and mechatronic applications for machine builders in the Northeast U.S. John then went to work for a local machine builder, helping them bring their automated test and measurement products to the North American market. Most recently, John worked for two European control manufacturers, helping them develop customers in the U.S. market.

As the Business Development Manager for Parvalux, John will be responsible for managing and promoting the Parvalux products in the United States, initially focusing on the industrial and e-mobility markets. “I’m excited to be on board and help bring a strong European brand to the U.S. market,” says John Uzzolino. “Parvalux has positioned themselves well to be a high-quality product at a competitive price, while offering both standard and highly customized solutions globally. Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – Worldwide, about 50 to 70 million people are suffering from visual impairment due to disorders of the retina. Adequate treatment is still impossible in many cases. Eye operations are always a big challenge for a surgeon, and steady hands are a key requirement. Surgeries like those for treating a detached retina require extreme precision. And when it comes to precision, human hands can’t hold a candle to robotic systems.

Ten to twenty times better precision

This is why the company Preceyes, which originated as a spin-out from the University of Eindhoven (Netherlands), has developed a completely new robotic system for eye surgery. Specially designed for the treatment of retina disorders, the assistance system improves precision by a factor of 10 to 20 compared with the human hand. This allows operations to be performed that are currently impossible due to lack of precision – an enormous gain for patients, but also for surgeons, whose effectiveness and accuracy will be vastly improved

The world’s first robot-assisted operation inside the eye was performed successfully at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. “This is the culmination of 10 years of work. The ease with which Professor MacLaren was able to perform the surgery is an important step ahead for robot-assisted eye operations and a clear vindication of our technology,” says Marc de Smet, MD Chief Medical Officer at Preceyes.

Haptic feedback

The functional principle is straightforward: While the operating surgeon is sitting next to the patient’s head looking through a microscope, he is operating a joystick whose motion is transmitted to a robotic arm (slave). The robot downscales the motion: When the surgeon moves the joystick by a centimeter, the tip of the robotic arm moves only by a millimeter. Meanwhile, the other hand performs manual tasks as required. The system is designed to allow surgeries to be performed with motion control alone as well, using two joysticks and two robotic arms..

In addition to a haptic feedback function that not only lets the surgeon see but also feel his actions, the robotic system also supports quick retooling. This is an important factor because it reduces the time required for an operation. The motions of the robotic arms are performed by high-precision drive systems of maxon.

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – Patients that suffer from chronic pain, metabolic disorders, diseases of the central nervous system and tumor diseases require accurately dosed medication. Here implantable medication delivery systems are used. Through the localized medication delivery, the dosage can be reduced to the required minimum. These infusion systems thus improve the quality of life of the patients. For many patients, it is only the medication delivery system that allows them to have a life outside of the clinic. Repetitive invasive, painful operations can be avoided. The risk of medication dependency and undesired side effects are reduced to a minimum. All these factors can contribute to the disease no longer being the central focus of the patient’s life.

For example, an active implant is implanted in the lower abdomen directly underneath the skin, where it delivers the medication dosage, programmed by the physician, to the body at the defined times of the day. The implantable unit has a wireless data interface to a patient interface by which the dosage can be adapted at any time. At regular intervals, the internal medication reservoir can be refilled by a specialist. The life span of the active implants measures many years and is limited only by the life of the battery. The core of the active implant is a piston pump manufactured by maxon medical, which specializes in medical technology and is a division of the maxon motor Group. However, the micro drives for implantable medication delivery systems are not comparable with customary maxon motors. In a customary motor, rotary motion is generated and yields torque and speed of rotation.

The reciprocating piston pump generates a linear movement that results in liquid pumping. The individual parts of the pump have very narrow tolerances and allow the pump volume to be adjusted with a precision of less a microliter per piston stroke.

As active implants are in direct contact with human tissue, biocompatible materials are an absolute requirement. Therefore, in most cases, titanium is used for the implants. Machining of titanium, especially safe and reliable laser welding, requires a very high level of expertise. Special testing and quality methods, such as inspecting the penetration depth, microhardness and density of the weld seams, are established procedures at maxon medical. The customer requirements on the product are thus fulfilled and the reliability and constant quality of the manufacturing processes are guaranteed. The entire assembly of the implantable micro drive takes place under cleanroom conditions.

The ECX SPEED series of brushless motors has been optimized for high speeds (up to 120,000 rpm). Several different performance classes are available to fit your application: Standard, High Power, sterilizable (up to 2000 cycles) or with ceramic bearings for high speeds.

With a few clicks of your mouse you can configure your drive online and place your order. With maxon motor’s configurator, it is easy to put together a customized DC motor – including gearhead, encoder and controller, to your specifications. Now, in addition to the brushed motors, you can also configure these three new high speed brushless micro motors.

ECX motors are available with diameters of 8 mm, 16 mm and 19 mm achieving speeds of up to 120,000 rpm. They run very smoothly and are highly efficient. They are available with different power stages and in standard or sterilizable versions.

All three high-speed motors (8 mm, 16 mm and 19 mm) are now available in maxon’s online shop, where customizing the drives is easy. This means that customers can fit the drives with specific mechanical and electrical components specific to their application needs. Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – In tumor treatment, neurosurgeons today use a thin, rigid needle to inject medication into the affected brain tissue. This carries a relatively high risk of injuring healthy tissue, because a rigid needle only allows the surgeon to enter a certain region of the brain, following a straight path. The ideal solution would be a flexible operating tool.

This is where the London Imperial College comes in. In recent years, a team led by Prof. Rodriguez y Baena worked on developing a flexible robotic needle capable of reaching the deeper regions of the brain, while simultaneously avoiding especially sensitive areas. The young researchers sought to imitate the special mechanism employed by female wood wasps that use their thin but very strong drill-like stings to lay eggs inside the wood of trees.

Under the project name STING (Soft Tissue Intervention and Neurosurgical Guide), the scientists developed a prototype consisting of four segments with an overall diameter of 2.5 millimeters, held together by a puzzle-like interlocking mechanism. maxon drives provide the back-and-forth motion of the segments.

“The whole range”

Dr. Secoli is a member of the Mechatronics in Medicine Lab at the Imperial College. He selected the brushless maxon EC20 flat motor with a GP22 planetary gearhead for the application. An EPOS 24/2 positioning controller provides exact positioning. “Easy access to the API (Application Programming Interface) was the major key criterion of selection. On top of that, for fast-prototype system, maxon is the only manufacturer that offers the whole range of products: motor, gearhead, controller” says Dr. Secoli.

Maxon’s Motion Control Sterilizable Motors EC 5 and EC 13 – Small, Precise and Incredibly Fast!

Maxon Motion Control Sterilizable MotorsFor the use in high speed medical applications of up to 90 000 rpm, maxon motor launches the two sterilizable drives “EC Size 5 sterilizable” and “EC 13 sterilizable”. They are designed for the use with or without the specially matched planetary gearheads. Stand-alone or as motor/gearhead combination; either way, the drives are characterized by their high nominal speed, an extremely low-noise and low-vibration operation, marginal thermal emission and small size. Small, precise and incredibly fast. Or, in other words: EC Size 5 sterilizable / GP Size 5 M and EC 13 sterilizable / GP 13 M.

Fall River, MA –The drives are identical and possess equal performance data and characteristics. As far as their outer dimensions are concerned, they aim for different target markets: Thus, motor and gearhead of Size 5 variant possess dimensions in U.S. Customary Units resulting in an outside diameter of ؽ inch and a shaft of Ø0.125 inch. The motor has a so-called “Servo Mount”, a well-established type of motor fixation.

The EC 13 / GP 13 variant’s home however is the metric system, which results in an outer diameter of Ø13 mm, a Ø3 mm shaft and a flange with 3 face side threads.

Despite their “personalized outer wrapping”, the two drives are characterized by their similarities: A particularly for medical technology adapted, compact design with very high nominal speed, quiet running, minimized thermal emission and sterilizability of typically 500 autoclave cycles.
