Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products – Even though it’s been done many times before, the docking maneuver between two objects in space is always a delicate and potentially dangerous procedure. The speed is extremely high (about 28,000 km/h in case of the ISS), and corrections are difficult. For example, when the two objects are about to meet, maneuvering thrusters can no longer be used, since their exhaust plumes can cause damage. To prevent harm, cargo transporters are caught by a robotic arm installed in the International Space Station (ISS) and berthed manually. Manned spacecraft on the other hand dock directly in a computer-controlled process.

This is the question that one of the most complex robotic systems ever built by humankind has set out to answer. Several of maxon’s electric drives are used for handling the soil samples—and to control the first Mars helicopter.

Will NASA, the US space agency, successfully land a fifth rover on Mars, allowing it to start its series of missions to bring Mars soil samples back to Earth? New Compact Motor

The MAC1500 motor sets completely new standards for the performance and size of servo controls. With a length of only 182mm for a 1500W motor with a torque of 4.78/14.3 Nm at 3000rpm, this MAC motor matches the size of traditional servo motors without built-in controllers with flange 130x130mm. This has only been possible through the use of extremely compact motors and the development of electronics and mechanics that utilise the latest technologies and manufacturing methods. So what about vibrations and temperature? As with the other integrated servo motors in the range (50-4500W), both the motor and all electronic components have been specifically selected to withstand the rigorous demands required by industrial use.
