Sharing the same physical dimensions, each is just 1.000 in. (25.4 mm) in diameter and the housings are 1.500 in. (38.1 mm) long. As every application is different Moticont offers two motor in the LVCM-025 Series of Voice Coil Motors. The LVCM-025-038-01 features a continuous force of 2.5 lbs (11.0 N) and a peak force of 7.8 lbs (34.7 N) and the LVCM-025-038-02 features a 1.000 in (25.4 mm) stroke, whereas, the LVCM-025-038-01 features a stroke of 0.37 in. (9.5 mm ) and the LVCM-025-038-02 features a continuous force of 16.4 oz (4.6 N) and a peak force of 51.9 oz (14.4 N).

This motor features high acceleration/deceleration, high speed, high reliability, zero backlash and a 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) stroke length. This very small brushless servo motor is an ideal low cost replacement for pneumatic linear actuators.

Also called an Electric Cylinder, this linear actuator has a threaded 2-56 UNC-2A shaft for a backlash free connection. The housing and coil each have 2 2-56-UNC-2B threaded mounting holes on 0.25 in (6.35 mm) centers. The built in centered shaft facilitates the commissioning of the motor for easy integration into current and future applications.

Featuring an open aperture of 0.50 in. (12.7 mm) this low cost, clean room friendly non-commutated motor is available off-the-shelf. The light weight and low inertia moving coil of the linear actuator demonstrates:

High acceleration/deceleration, high speed, zero cogging, and by connecting directly to the load, zero backlash.

The HVCM-051-025-013-01 Linear actuator has a hollow core that allows for optics, illumination, laser beams, or cables to pass through, additionally, it has a continuous force rating of 5.3 lbs (23.7 N) and a peak force of 16.9 lbs (74.8 N) at a 10% duty cycle. This compact voice coil actuator measuring just 2.000 in. (50.8 mm) dia. X 1.00 in. (25.4 mm) housing length with a 0.50 in. (12.7 mm) stroke is ideal for applications such as: Medical diagnostics and testing, laser beam steering, wafer handling, laser cutting and welding, dynamic vibration absorption, optical focusing, scanning, assembly, and positioning applications.

Two 10-32 UNF-2B x 0.25 in. (6.4 mm) deep threaded mounting holes on 1.000 in. (25.4 mm) centers in the housing and coil allows for flexible and easy integration into new and existing applications. When used in closed loop applications with an adequate optional position sensor, resolutions of less then 1 micron are achievable for millions of cycles. If a longer stroke, higher force, a smaller foot print, or customized mounting is required, consult Moticont’s team of engineers. All of Moticont’s voice coil linear actuators are available as complete plug-and-play systems, including: Position sensor, servo driver, power supply, and if required with a linear position sensor.

Santa Clarita, CA — Motion Control – H2W Technologies has developed several high torque rotary voice coil actuators, otherwise known as a limited angle torque motors or LATs. The model TWR-034-800-1RC was designed to allow for a relatively low moving mass and inertia, as well as a long rotary stroke of 34 degrees [0.59 radians] on a 11.4” [290 mm] arm, which equates to a travel of 6.75 inches [171.5 mm] which is long travel for this style of actuator, which typically restrained to an equivalent linear travel of 2 inches [50.8 mm]. This rotary voice coil actuator can generate a continuous torque of 1400 in-oz [9.8 N-m] and a peak torque of 4200 in-oz [29 N-m] at a duty cycle of 10% (i.e. 1 second on, and 9 seconds off) in each coil on a 11.4 inch [290 mm] rotation arm.  The TWR-034-800-1RC has a total angular displacement of  34 degrees [0.59 radians] and a motor constant of 275 in-oz/sqrt(watt) [1.92 N-m/sqrt(watt)].

The Voice coil motor requires 1.7 amps of continuous current per coil and 5.1 amps of peak current per coil to generate the specified forces.  The actuator fits in and envelope of 10.26 in [260.5 mm] x 3.01 in[76.4 mm] x 3.39 in [86 mm].  The moving coil design ensures a hysteresis free movement as the coil is wet wound and self-supported, and the non-commutated coil allows for ripple-free motion and no cogging.  The voice coil actuator has been designed with mounting provisions in the magnet and coil assemblies.  This allows for the integration of a bearing system to maintain the clearances between the coil and permanent magnetic field assemblies. The rotary voice coil actuator is ideal for applications requiring high torque and high- speed applications. Examples of such applications are driving a gimbal axis in scanning applications as well as providing stabilizing torques for image stabilization. New Compact Motor

The MAC1500 motor sets completely new standards for the performance and size of servo controls. With a length of only 182mm for a 1500W motor with a torque of 4.78/14.3 Nm at 3000rpm, this MAC motor matches the size of traditional servo motors without built-in controllers with flange 130x130mm. This has only been possible through the use of extremely compact motors and the development of electronics and mechanics that utilise the latest technologies and manufacturing methods. So what about vibrations and temperature? As with the other integrated servo motors in the range (50-4500W), both the motor and all electronic components have been specifically selected to withstand the rigorous demands required by industrial use.

Power Supply and Energy Savings

Powering this motor is easy since it only requires connection of the main voltage of 3x400VAC through the M23 connectors. Control voltage for the encoder and microprocessor circuitry is 24VDC: In an emergency-stop situation, where an approved relay has cut-off the main power, encoder position and other values are maintained by this control voltage. Furthermore highly effective switching technology is used to ensure low heat generation resulting in appreciable energy savings.

Other Advantages

One of the big advantages of using the integrated MAC1500 motor is that you don’t need to install a separate servo driver or controller in a control cabinet. This gives you many subsequent advantages: Space savings in your control cabinet, saving of expensive motor and encoder cables, saving time (and money) for cabling, noise is minimized due to internal cabling and also installation errors between driver and motor are eliminated. In addition, service is much easier, since the motor and controller can be replaced as a single integrated unit. Hence downtime is minimized and production is maximized.

Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth.

Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover. For example, maxon DC motors are installed in the robotic arm, which moves the samples from station to station. Maxon motors will also be used for sealing and depositing the sample containers.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is carrying out the mission, and have asked maxon to produce 10 drives for the rover. As with almost all previous Mars missions, these drives are based on standard products from maxon’s catalog with modifications. For the first time, NASA is using brushless DC motors, including: nine EC 32 flat and one EC 20 flat in combination with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead. Working closely with JPL specialists, maxon engineers developed the drives over several years and tested them thoroughly to achieve the highest standards of quality. “We’ve learned a lot from this exciting project,” says Robin Phillips, head of the maxon SpaceLab. “We now have very broad expertise in space applications and have established quality assurance processes that meet the expectations of the industry. Customers from other industries such as the medical sector, where requirements are often similar, can also benefit from this know-how.”  Space missions place the highest demands on drive systems. This includes vibrations during the rocket launch, vacuum during the journey, impacts on landing, and the harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, where temperatures fluctuate between -125 and +20 degrees Celsius and dust penetrates everywhere

The Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021 – but it won’t be alone. A drone helicopter called Ingenuity will be attached to the underside of the rover. It weighs 1.8 kilograms, is solar powered and will perform several short flights, as well as take aerial images. The main goal of this experiment is to test the concept for further drones of this kind. maxon has six brushed DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters controlling the tilt of the rotor blades and the direction of flight. The drives are very light, dynamic and highly energy-efficient. These properties are crucial, because every gram counts on the Mars helicopter. Flying on Mars is not easy. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The drone helicopter has flown in a simulated test environment in the JPL laboratory. Whether it will lift off on Mars remains to be seen. First, other obstacles, such as the rocket launch, must be successful. “We hope that everything goes well and that we’ll soon see our drives in action on Mars,” says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control -H2W Technologies has developed a high force non-commutated DC linear actuator, otherwise known as a direct drive voice coil actuator, designed specifically for use in cryogenic environments. Material choice and design parameters were implemented such that the motor can operate without degradation or damage when placed in a cryogenic environment. The model NCC14-78-830-1SM can generate a continuous force of 92 pounds [410 N] and a peak force of 294 pounds [1300 N] at a duty cycle of 10% (i.e. 1 second on, and 9 seconds off). A moving mass of 4.4 lbs [1.97 kg] allows for a maximum theoretical continuous acceleration of more than 20 G’s.


Although the motor can generate large forces, this specific actuator was designed for a relatively high motor constant, so that the required force can be generated with a relatively low power input. Additionally, the motor was designed to maximize the stroke output while preserving a minimal actuator length.

The NCC14-78-830-1SM has a stroke of 1.4 in [35.6 mm] and a motor constant of 6.9 lbs/sqrt(watt) [31 N/sqrt(watt)]. The voice coil motor requires 3.8 amps of continuous current and 12.1 amps of peak current in order to generate the specified forces. The actuator has a diameter of 7.87 in [200 mm] and a retracted length of 3.50 in [89 mm].

The moving coil design ensures a hysteresis free movement as the bobbin is constructed of aluminum while the non-commutated coil allows for ripple-free motion and no cogging. The voice coil actuator has been designed with a thru hole in the magnet and coil assemblies. This allows for the integration of a shaft and bearing system through the center of the motor. Alternatively, the actuator can be used in many applications where a thru hole would be necessary such as focusing applications or fiber optic routing.

Santa Clarita, CA – When three-phase AC power is applied to the primary, a travelling electromagnetic flux wave is induced and moves relative to the primary. The wave induces an electric current in the conductive reaction plate. The induced electric current interacts with the magnetic flux to produce a linear force. The speed of the motor can be varied by changing the input frequency using an adjustable frequency drive.

The actuator utilizes a unique electromagnetic circuit design. This design allows for a motors with minimal cross section diameter of up to 1.20 inches [30.5 mm], and strokes up to 0.60 in. [15.2 mm] stroke; this size generates up to 1.12 lbs [5.0 N] of continuous force and 3.36 lbs [15 N] of peak force.  Each actuator is guided by sliding contact bushing assemblies. Voice coil actuators are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – Worldwide, about 50 to 70 million people are suffering from visual impairment due to disorders of the retina. Adequate treatment is still impossible in many cases. Eye operations are always a big challenge for a surgeon, and steady hands are a key requirement. Surgeries like those for treating a detached retina require extreme precision. And when it comes to precision, human hands can’t hold a candle to robotic systems.

Ten to twenty times better precision

This is why the company Preceyes, which originated as a spin-out from the University of Eindhoven (Netherlands), has developed a completely new robotic system for eye surgery. Specially designed for the treatment of retina disorders, the assistance system improves precision by a factor of 10 to 20 compared with the human hand. This allows operations to be performed that are currently impossible due to lack of precision – an enormous gain for patients, but also for surgeons, whose effectiveness and accuracy will be vastly improved

The world’s first robot-assisted operation inside the eye was performed successfully at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. “This is the culmination of 10 years of work. The ease with which Professor MacLaren was able to perform the surgery is an important step ahead for robot-assisted eye operations and a clear vindication of our technology,” says Marc de Smet, MD Chief Medical Officer at Preceyes.

Haptic feedback

The functional principle is straightforward: While the operating surgeon is sitting next to the patient’s head looking through a microscope, he is operating a joystick whose motion is transmitted to a robotic arm (slave). The robot downscales the motion: When the surgeon moves the joystick by a centimeter, the tip of the robotic arm moves only by a millimeter. Meanwhile, the other hand performs manual tasks as required. The system is designed to allow surgeries to be performed with motion control alone as well, using two joysticks and two robotic arms..

In addition to a haptic feedback function that not only lets the surgeon see but also feel his actions, the robotic system also supports quick retooling. This is an important factor because it reduces the time required for an operation. The motions of the robotic arms are performed by high-precision drive systems of maxon.

The new GVCM-095-089-03 Linear Voice Coil Motor (also known as linear DC motor) features a continuous force of 63.9 lbs (284.1 N) and 202.0 lbs (898.4 N) of peak force at a 10% duty cycle. Guided by a long-life plain bearing that can allow side loads up to 3 lb (13.5 N), the precision ground 0.236 inch (6.0 mm) diameter shaft with an internal thread has a stroke length of 0.5 in. (12.7 mm). The quiet, efficient, smooth, cog-free motion of this low inertia brushless GVCM-095-089-03 Linear Voice Coil Motor is ideal for: Clamping, work holding, sorting equipment, assembly, medical devices, antenna positioning, testing, slide actuators, shutters, doors, valve actuation, wafer handling, and optical focusing.

This new voice coil actuator features: High speed, high acceleration/deceleration, zero backlash, high accuracy, high repeatability, and a high force to size in either direction, in a housing measuring just 3.75 in. (95.3 mm) dia. x 3.5 in. (88.9 mm) long. The housing and coil ends of the motor have threaded mounting holes in the housing and coil ends for easy integration into new and existing applications.
