Motion Control – Maxon Motors Are in A New Docking System for Space Rendezvous!

Motion Control – Docking System for ISS!

The European Space Agency (ESA) is working on a new system to enable easy docking between two spacecraft. maxon developed two special drive systems for this purpose.

motion control - ISS docking system

Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products – Even though it’s been done many times before, the docking maneuver between two objects in space is always a delicate and potentially dangerous procedure. The speed is extremely high (about 28,000 km/h in case of the ISS), and corrections are difficult. For example, when the two objects are about to meet, maneuvering thrusters can no longer be used, since their exhaust plumes can cause damage. To prevent harm, cargo transporters are caught by a robotic arm installed in the International Space Station (ISS) and berthed manually. Manned spacecraft on the other hand dock directly in a computer-controlled process.

Motion Control – Maxon’s Brushless 90 mm Flat Motor with MILE Encoder

Maxon motion control EC 90 mm Flat Motor with encoder

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA –The ultra slim design of maxon’s motion control EC 90 flat motor is now equipped with a MILE encoder. MILE (Maxon’s Inductive Little Encoder) is the world’s smallest inductive rotary encoder. Its operating principle is based on the detection of high-frequency inductivity which generates eddy current in an electrically conducting target. The advantage of a high-frequency inductive method of measurement includes high speed, high robustness towards dust or oil vapor and insensitivity against interferences pulses such as PWM controllers or motor magnets.

Maxon motion control EC 90 mm Flat Motor with encoder (cut away)

This new EC 90 flat MILE is extremely precise with resolutions of up to 3200 impulses per turn and a remarkable high nominal torque of 517 mNm. This makes it the perfect choice in applications, such as door drives, logistic robots, or solar trackers. The motor is distinguished by optimal integration of the MILE encoder and combines state-of-the-art with the tried and tested features; flange pattern, fixation, and pin assignment.
