Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products – Even though it’s been done many times before, the docking maneuver between two objects in space is always a delicate and potentially dangerous procedure. The speed is extremely high (about 28,000 km/h in case of the ISS), and corrections are difficult. For example, when the two objects are about to meet, maneuvering thrusters can no longer be used, since their exhaust plumes can cause damage. To prevent harm, cargo transporters are caught by a robotic arm installed in the International Space Station (ISS) and berthed manually. Manned spacecraft on the other hand dock directly in a computer-controlled process.

John started his career as a Sales Engineer working with a high tech distribution company, focusing on solving motion control and mechatronic applications for machine builders in the Northeast U.S. John then went to work for a local machine builder, helping them bring their automated test and measurement products to the North American market. MILE (Maxon’s Inductive Little Encoder) is the world’s smallest inductive rotary encoder. Its operating principle is based on the detection of high-frequency inductivity which generates eddy current in an electrically conducting target. The advantage of a high-frequency inductive method of measurement includes high speed, high robustness towards dust or oil vapor and insensitivity against interferences pulses such as PWM controllers or motor magnets.

This new EC 90 flat MILE is extremely precise with resolutions of up to 3200 impulses per turn and a remarkable high nominal torque of 517 mNm.
