Motion Control – Low Power Voice Coil Actuator for Cryogenic Environments

Motion Control –  Voice Coil Actuator for Cryogenic Environments

motion control - cryogenic Voice coil actuator

H2W Logo

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control -H2W Technologies has developed a high force non-commutated DC linear actuator, otherwise known as a direct drive voice coil actuator, designed specifically for use in cryogenic environments. Material choice and design parameters were implemented such that the motor can operate without degradation or damage when placed in a cryogenic environment. The model NCC14-78-830-1SM can generate a continuous force of 92 pounds [410 N] and a peak force of 294 pounds [1300 N] at a duty cycle of 10% (i.e. 1 second on, and 9 seconds off). A moving mass of 4.4 lbs [1.97 kg] allows for a maximum theoretical continuous acceleration of more than 20 G’s.

Although the motor can generate large forces, this specific actuator was designed for a relatively high motor constant, so that the required force can be generated with a relatively low power input. Additionally, the motor was designed to maximize the stroke output while preserving a minimal actuator length.

The NCC14-78-830-1SM has a stroke of 1.4 in [35.6 mm] and a motor constant of 6.9 lbs/sqrt(watt) [31 N/sqrt(watt)]. The voice coil motor requires 3.8 amps of continuous current and 12.1 amps of peak current in order to generate the specified forces. The actuator has a diameter of 7.87 in [200 mm] and a retracted length of 3.50 in [89 mm].

The moving coil design ensures a hysteresis free movement as the bobbin is constructed of aluminum while the non-commutated coil allows for ripple-free motion and no cogging. The voice coil actuator has been designed with a thru hole in the magnet and coil assemblies. This allows for the integration of a shaft and bearing system through the center of the motor. Alternatively, the actuator can be used in many applications where a thru hole would be necessary such as focusing applications or fiber optic routing.

motion control linear stepper motor

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components — Nippon Pulse is excited to introduce its smallest linear stepper motor yet, the PFL20 Linearstep. The PFL20 is a highly efficient, high thrust tin-can linear actuator with a 20mm diameter and a bipolar winding.

PFL20 is RoHS-compliant, has a 30/60mm effective stroke, and can reach 6 N of force at 200 pps. With 24 steps per revolution, the lead screw has a 1.2mm thread pitch; the PFL20 also reaches 5V rated voltage, resistance of 33 Ohms/phase and inductance of 12mH/phase. The datasheet with additional specifications can be found here.

The simple structure of Linearstep motors – just a threaded rotor hub and lead screw – helps to save space and reduce costs, due to fewer components needed compared to systems that convert rotary motion to linear. Linearstep motors are also easy to control, and can be ordered with unipolar or bipolar windings and a variety of usable voltages. In addition to the 20mm motor size, this motor is also available in 25mm (captive or non-captive option) and 35mm diameter sizes.

Motion Control Application – Implantable medication delivery systems: Where every microliter counts!

Motion Control – Application

Implantable medication delivery systems can have a decisive influence on the quality of life of the patients. In many cases, such delivery systems are vital for the survival of the patients – the systems have to be absolutely reliable. maxon motor manufactures high-precision micro drives for medication delivery systems.

Maxon Logo

motion control application - implantable pump

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – Patients that suffer from chronic pain, metabolic disorders, diseases of the central nervous system and tumor diseases require accurately dosed medication. Here implantable medication delivery systems are used. Through the localized medication delivery, the dosage can be reduced to the required minimum. These infusion systems thus improve the quality of life of the patients. For many patients, it is only the medication delivery system that allows them to have a life outside of the clinic. Repetitive invasive, painful operations can be avoided. The risk of medication dependency and undesired side effects are reduced to a minimum. All these factors can contribute to the disease no longer being the central focus of the patient’s life.

For example, an active implant is implanted in the lower abdomen directly underneath the skin, where it delivers the medication dosage, programmed by the physician, to the body at the defined times of the day. The implantable unit has a wireless data interface to a patient interface by which the dosage can be adapted at any time. At regular intervals, the internal medication reservoir can be refilled by a specialist. The life span of the active implants measures many years and is limited only by the life of the battery. The core of the active implant is a piston pump manufactured by maxon medical, which specializes in medical technology and is a division of the maxon motor Group. However, the micro drives for implantable medication delivery systems are not comparable with customary maxon motors. In a customary motor, rotary motion is generated and yields torque and speed of rotation.

maxon miniature piston pump

The reciprocating piston pump generates a linear movement that results in liquid pumping. The individual parts of the pump have very narrow tolerances and allow the pump volume to be adjusted with a precision of less a microliter per piston stroke.

As active implants are in direct contact with human tissue, biocompatible materials are an absolute requirement. Therefore, in most cases, titanium is used for the implants. Machining of titanium, especially safe and reliable laser welding, requires a very high level of expertise. Special testing and quality methods, such as inspecting the penetration depth, microhardness and density of the weld seams, are established procedures at maxon medical. The customer requirements on the product are thus fulfilled and the reliability and constant quality of the manufacturing processes are guaranteed. The entire assembly of the implantable micro drive takes place under cleanroom conditions.

maxon medical – Specialist for medical drive solutions and active implants

maxon medical specializes in the manufacturing of medical drive solutions for active implants. The division received ISO 13485 certification in December 2008. The quality management system and the project organization ensure safe, reliable and standard-compliant products and provide the customer with a sound basis for statutory approval of the final products.

Professional project organization and a proven risk management system allow efficient implementation of customer projects. Strict maintenance of statutory requirements has top priority in the implementation of medical technology projects with risk class IIb + III. Production processes, production systems and testing systems always fall under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice, Commission Directive 2003/94/EC), regardless of the classification of the product.

maxon medical meets highest customer requirements – from selection of suitable suppliers to multi-tier quality control, from the individual parts to the final product. Manufacturing processes in the field of medical technology have very high documentation requirements during the entire value-added chain. All the way from the project idea to series production. In the end, a comprehensive and detailed documentation of all processes is required, including verification of process capability and traceability right back to the individual parts. This process control, matured to the last detail, characterizes maxon medical. It is an important and indispensable component of the entire production process and guarantees the high quality of the micro drives used for active implants of maxon medical.

Motion Control – Redundant Coil Voice Coil Motor Available from H2W Technologies, Inc!

Motion Control Redundant Voice Coil Motor from H2W Technologies!
motion control redundant voice coil motor

H2W Logo

Santa Clarita, CA —–

When three-phase AC power is applied to the primary, a travelling electromagnetic flux wave is induced and moves relative to the primary. The wave induces an electric current in the conductive reaction plate. The induced electric current interacts with the magnetic flux to produce a linear force. The speed of the motor can be varied by changing the input frequency using an adjustable frequency drive.

Each coil pair operates as its own voice coil.

Redundancy is a requirement on many flight systems in a special case when one coil faults, the other can be used to make the motor “fault-resistant”.

Other systems require simplified circuitry which would not allow the change of current polarity in order to change the direction, in these cases each coil can be used to drive the coil in a single direction. The challenge in manufacturing a redundant coil is ensuring the same performance no matter the coil, which requires precise manipulation of the magnetic circuit design, and the precise coil layout to ensure the identical operation and constants for each coil. This will allow the controls to seamlessly switch between the two coils.

There are two ways of accomplishing this coil redundancy. The most common way would be to generate multiple coils operating on individual magnetic circuits. This requires a longer coil and multiple magnetic circuits; however this is the most robust design and the least vulnerable to damage or interference from the redundant coil. The NCC08-18-025-2R2C is an example of the multiple coil design. An alternate method, which allows for the most compact solution, would be a multi-filar wind. This method only requires one magnetic circuit, which is why the length is shorter. In this case multiple coils are wound in the same winding space.

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components – With the EPOS4 series, maxon is offering a reliable and extremely versatile platform of high-performance motion controllers. It addresses the needs of system integrators and fulfills the requirements of a variety of applications, such as industrial automation, apparatus engineering, and robotics. The platform is now being complemented with two new Compact EtherCAT models.

The highly successful EPOS4 positioning controllers made by maxon motor are scalable and consistently support a uniform set of functionalities and connection options. Modularity with different designs (module, compact, or encased version) ensures optimal integration in a wide variety of applications. The controllers offer excellent dynamic properties, control quality, and power density while requiring only minimal installation space. In addition, their automatic controller setting makes them ideally suited for easy control of both brushless (BLDC) and brushed DC motors.

Now with dual loop control

Maxon is expanding its family of EPOS4 products with two new EtherCAT Compact controllers (24/1.5 and 50/5). At the same time, maxon is upgrading the capabilities of the entire platform by enabling dual loop control. Dual loop control simultaneously controls motor and load feedback for optimum performance within the system. The EPOS Studio software ensures the minimum possible set-up times with its automatic Regulation Tuning feature.

Condition monitoring for added value

However, the EPOS4 has many additional capabilities: for example, the controller continuously delivers hundreds of data points about the drive system for online condition monitoring and transmits this data to a higher-level system via CANopen or EtherCAT in real time. This supports complex predictive maintenance systems that anticipate impending failures to avoid costly repairs, resulting in higher productivity and lower cost.
