The new X-Axis BE125-10 Open Screw Drive System is a compact linear stage measuring 125 mm (4.921 in.) wide x 86 mm (3.386 in.) high x 4391 mm (172.874 in.) long and can handle dynamic loads to 500 kg (1102 lbs). The standard stroke length is 4000 mm (157.480 in.) and custom stroke lengths to 10 m (32.8 ft) can be specified.

This new drive system consists of a precision ground open screw and two pre-loaded radial ball bearings additionally the open screw drive system is supported by bearings spaced every 250 mm that prevent screws as long as 10 m from whipping even at 5000 rpms. This is in contrast to a closed screw system (ball screw and nut) which are more limited as to length of travel and rpms.

Shafting options include: Solid and hollow Class L RC60, 300 series stainless steel in lengths to 12 feet. FDA/USDA/3A-Dairy compliant, shafting features: Excellent corrosion and chemical resistance, custom machining to print, pre-drilling and assembly.The guide system consists of two parallel shafts and 8 preloaded radial bearings. In addition to smooth motion, low vibration, low noise (less than 68db at 3000 rpm), and minimal heat generation the BE125-10 Open Screw Drive System is capable of travel speed up to 1.7 m/sec (5.5 ft/sec). and pitch and yaw accuracy over 4000 mm (157.480 in.) of travel is just +/- 0.02 mm (0.00079 in).

Miniature ball screw drives are primarily used in the semiconductor industry, as well as in optical, medical and measurement engineering applications. Our portfolio of miniature ball screw drives offers a total of 5 different nut shapes for your mounting design. The nuts can be provided either with preloading (for zero backlash) or axial play. They can be combined with two standard types of shafts or a custom shaft. Ground recirculating ball screws are available in accuracy classes P1 to P5. Rolled versions with lower accuracy exist starting from a minimum nominal diameter of 8 mm. Special versions, for example for clean room applications or vacuum engineering, are available upon request. Our experience and proven quality is evident here too.

Situation:

In the area of automated laboratory equipment, servo-controlled pipetting modules are a key component of high-throughput systems. A major, global OEM had been using an off-the-shelf linear actuator to drive the pipette. This actuator had a limited range of capability in terms of speed, positioning accuracy, and force sensitivity. Although it met the minimum technical requirements and was cost-effective, engineers soon were asked to push performance to the next level.

 

Challenge:

The company decided to develop a next-generation system. Throughput was essential, as it wanted to target the largest hospitals and laboratories handling tens of thousands of samples annually. The pipetting module also needed to have enhanced flexibility to support a greater variety of operations. It should allow for a wider range of speeds and be highly accurate in both positioning and bottom-finding. Engineers were also tasked with achieving a 10-year lifetime with little or no maintenance. This high lifetime was critical because their business model included free field service. To meet these new requirements, the actuator would have to be redesigned. In particular, the bearing configuration did not support the required accuracy and sensitivity. The supplier was unwilling to modify its design. Company engineers realized that they would have to design a custom actuator.

Resolution:

They came to Steinmeyer for a precision ground ball screw. They knew that Steinmeyer had world-class quality and a very wide selection of miniature screw sizes. For this project, they were able to consider shaft diameters of 5mm or 6mm, with pitch down to 0.5mm! They selected a 6mm screw to meet the challenge. Company engineers conducted extensive performance testing on the first prototype quantities. They put the new module through an exhaustive regimen of motion, and measured positioning, force sensitivity, friction torque, motor current, and other parameters. They verified that their module design met all of the new performance requirements. The company has since achieved FDA approval for the new system and formally launched commercial sales.

Future Plans:

Noise minimization is important for laboratory equipment. The next generation pipetting module will look to ensure the quietest possible operation. The OEM will be evaluating our proprietary super-finishing process called optiSLITE. This technology removes the largest irregularities left over from thread grinding of the shaft. The resulting surface yields a noticeably smoother and quieter operation.

Woburn, MA – Ball screws with high leads and high linear speeds are notoriously noisy. The loading and unloading of the balls against the return is the main source of noise. With steel balls and steel returns, this cycling can create a loud “whirling” sound at high speeds, especially when using preloaded ball nuts. Steinmeyer has been researching this issue, and recently announced some important results involving process improvements that may yield benefits across most of our product range.

Meanwhile, on the design side, the innovative plastic end caps provide a solution for small diameter screws. As shown in the 3D drawing below, the steel body (blue) has an integrated flange and “through the nut” ball recirculation. The plastic end caps (gray) provide quiet return, and may also include integrated combination wipers (not shown).

Quiet Series screws are designed typically for a lead/diameter ratio greater than 0.5. Due to the high lead, they are especially well-suited for use in high speed pick-and-place actuators. The screws are available in diameters from 5 to 20 mm and leads up to 32 mm! All feature dual start threads, P5 accuracy grade, and ball nuts with zero or minimum axial play. The Next Generation of Intelligent Balloon Catheters Depend on Novel Designs of Ball Screw Driven Pumps

Situation:

In the realm of cardiovascular assist devices, recent developments have focused on fully implantable pumps. Among the first was HeartMate, quickly followed by Impella and HeartWare. Fully implantable devices are very expensive to develop and produce. Plus they are limited to patients who can tolerate the highly invasive procedure.

A key development in cardiovascular assist devices would be to combine the less-invasive approach of implantable balloons and external pumps with the high portability and reliability of fully implantable systems. This advance would allow the treatment of a much wider range of patients and conditions. A Steinmeyer customer set out to develop an innovative pump to achieve this advance in an intra-aortic system

 

Challenge:

One of the main technical challenges to this approach is designing a wearable pump that can carefully control the balloon’s pressurization. The pump must meet a demanding combination of performance requirements, including:

  • Precise control of pressure
  • Reversible pressurization
  • Light weight
  • Compact size
  • Quiet operation
  • Continuous performance for at least one year

Meeting these requirements was a significant challenge for their engineers. They built and tested early prototypes using traditional designs such as diaphragm pumps. But this approach required separate chambers for positive and negative pressure. The resulting systems were far too large and heavy. So they were forced to find a new approach.

Results:

Their main innovation was selecting a precision ground ball screw as the drive mechanism and pairing it with a custom engineered metal bellows as the pressure chamber. Ball screws deliver exceptional thrust density while enabling high linear acceleration in both the forward and reverse directions. Surrounded by the bellows, this results in an extremely compact and quiet design. Ball screws are also known for their high efficiency (>90%), smooth operation, and long life. Their efficiency enables the use of small motors and low power consumption, which in turn reduce the size and weight of the entire system.

The engineers turned to Steinmeyer to ensure the smoothest running, highest quality ball screw. And they also knew that Steinmeyer was extremely well-qualified to provide technical support through all stages of development. There are five ways a ball screw may fail due to overload:

  • Excessive dynamic loading, which means the screw makes too many revolutions under a certain load resulting in material fatigue. This can be avoided by selecting a ball screw with sufficient dynamic load capacity (or by reducing the number of revolutions and/or reducing the load). This is the subject of the load capacity discussion.
  • Exceeding the static load capacity, which causes instant and permanent damage to the ball screw due to brinelling of balls and races, and prevents any further normal operation of the ball screw. Static load capacities are listed as technical data.
  • Buckling of the shaft under compressive load. Buckling load value depends on bearing method and free length of the loaded ball screw shaft.
  • Failure of the nut body or of the bolts that connect it to the slide. This may happen even before the static capacity is reached. Safe loads are discussed on the following pages.
  • Radial loads. It means the load capacities given in this catalogue apply only to pure axial loading. As there are always tolerances in the alignment of bearings and linear guideways, there may be a small amount of radial force, which should be minimized. Under normal conditions, a radial load less than 5% of the minimum axial load will not cause any problems. When considering a ball screw for use under radial load, please consult Steinmeyer engineers.

BUCKLING

There are several analytical ways to demonstrate safety from buckling. In machine design, the most frequently used is a simple calculation using formulas based on Euler equations.

Other, more accurate methods include non-linear FEM analysis and more involved mathematics. These methods are normally used in aerospace applications, where excess safety margins are not possible due to weight limitations. Please contact us if you require such an analysis.

FRACTURE LOAD

Some ball screws cannot be loaded all the way to their static capacity. Screws with high dynamic load capacity (which might be selected to obtain a long enough service life at a much lighter load) will necessarily have a high static capacity. But the term “static capacity” is misleading, since the ball screw may actually fail due to fracture of the nut flange, nut body, or connecting bolts before reaching this load!

TECHNICAL TIP

A reasonable load for a ballscrew, which may be sustained for significant travel, is about 10% of its dynamic capacity.

A mean load of 10% of its dynamic capacity results in a theoretical life of 1 billion revolutions, which is the upper limit of the range where the life equation is valid. Mean loads of a reasonably sized ball screw will therefore be somewhat higher than this, but normally not exceed 20% of its dynamic capacity.

For short peak loads, the loading may be higher, but normally the loading of a ball nut with 2-point contact should not exceed 2.8 times the preload. And preload is around 5% – 10% of dynamic capacity.

Steinmeyer Rolled ball screws provides an excellent price-performance ratio. They are used for applications with lower requirements for efficiency and lifetime.

BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – Rolled ball screws from Steinmeyer are in most of the cases a highly attractive alternative compared with other driving solutions, like rack and pinion or belt-drive systems. Steinmeyer rolled ball screws are used in linear modules in handling applications, in medical applications, and also on the feed axis in woodworking machining centers.

Through a highly efficient and fully automated deformation process in the manufacturing of the screw shafts, Steinmeyer rolled ball screws exhibit a very attractive price-to-performance ratio, along with high precision. This product is available as a ready-made ball screw, with the nut mounted and bearing journal machined, or delivered as an unmounted shaft and nut.

The hardened and tempered screw shafts can be produced in lengths up to 3m, for nominal diameters of 20mm or below, and up to 6m in diameters of 25mm and above.

Steinmeyer rolled ball screws are executed in an accuracy class up to T5, looking at the lead error and also at all other specified tolerances in geometry and position.

Using either a liner or an axial deflector system, the single nuts are designed with a flange according to ISO 3408 dimensions or with a connecting thread.
