One of the decisions made by the two partners is that maxon, as global drive specialist, will handle the future development and production of the actuators for ANYmal. ANYmal is an autonomous, four-legged robot that is capable of inspecting and monitoring industrial systems and is destined to also take on dangerous maintenance tasks in the future. The robot can even cope with difficult infrastructures such as stairs and inclines, and is used in a wide variety of industries.

In July, NASA will be sending its fifth rover to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover will also carry a helicopter that will perform the first flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors will be used for numerous mission-critical tasks.

Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet. Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover. For example, maxon DC motors are installed in the robotic arm, which moves the samples from station to station. Maxon motors will also be used for sealing and depositing the sample containers.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is carrying out the mission, and have asked maxon to produce 10 drives for the rover. As with almost all previous Mars missions, these drives are based on standard products from maxon’s catalog with modifications. For the first time, NASA is using brushless DC motors, including: nine EC 32 flat and one EC 20 flat in combination with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead. Working closely with JPL specialists, maxon engineers developed the drives over several years and tested them thoroughly to achieve the highest standards of quality. “We’ve learned a lot from this exciting project,” says Robin Phillips, head of the maxon SpaceLab. “We now have very broad expertise in space applications and have established quality assurance processes that meet the expectations of the industry. Customers from other industries such as the medical sector, where requirements are often similar, can also benefit from this know-how.”  Space missions place the highest demands on drive systems. This includes vibrations during the rocket launch, vacuum during the journey, impacts on landing, and the harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, where temperatures fluctuate between -125 and +20 degrees Celsius and dust penetrates everywhere

The Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021 – but it won’t be alone. A drone helicopter called Ingenuity will be attached to the underside of the rover. It weighs 1.8 kilograms, is solar powered and will perform several short flights, as well as take aerial images. The main goal of this experiment is to test the concept for further drones of this kind. maxon has six brushed DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters controlling the tilt of the rotor blades and the direction of flight. The drives are very light, dynamic and highly energy-efficient. These properties are crucial, because every gram counts on the Mars helicopter. Flying on Mars is not easy. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The drone helicopter has flown in a simulated test environment in the JPL laboratory. Whether it will lift off on Mars remains to be seen. First, other obstacles, such as the rocket launch, must be successful. “We hope that everything goes well and that we’ll soon see our drives in action on Mars,” says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

Forestville, CA — The RS-25 Resonant Scanner from Equipment Solutions is optimized for applications that typically require a means to scan an optical beam. This motion control resonant scanner is a very efficient means of oscillating or vibrating a mirror or similar load at a fixed frequency. Up to a 25 mm diameter mirror can be set at the factory to oscillate at a fixed frequency of 20 Hz to 550 Hz, and mirror sweep can be adjusted to a total of 90 degrees optical. The very compact RS-25 Resonant Scanner measurers just 25 x 58 x 21 mm and all electronics necessary to control and drive the scanner are fully integrated. Typical applications include: 3D laser digitizing & measurement, printing, raster scanners, laser projectors, laser marking, laser range finding, barcode scanning, confocal microscopy, FLIR, retinal image acquisition, semiconductor inspection, laser tuning, and biological and medical research.

The RS-25 Resonant Scanner can optionally be configured with a very high-resolution position sensor. This non-contact electro-optic sensor provides a means to directly monitor the angular position of the user’s load with micro-radian scale resolution and repeatability. The sensor naturally produces an analog signal proportional to position and is noise limited, however, options include a high-resolution 16-bit Analog-to-Digital converter to quickly sample and report the mirror position (up to 1500 samples-per-second) at any time.

Unparalleled performance and reliability have been achieved through a continuous and careful attention to every design detail. This relentless drive has generated patent pending concepts and ideas that distinguish the RS-25 Resonant Scanner. The RS-25 Resonant Scanner has a virtually unlimited life. Carefully designed flexures mimic a conventional spring-mass harmonic motion system, and a small voice coil motor coupled to the system compensates for small system loses that would otherwise dampen the oscillation.

Two connectors are accessible from the side of the unit. One, a mini USB connector, supports high speed USB communications and power sourcing. The second connector provides electrical control and signal interfaces (e.g. analog amplitude control and feedback (e.g.) mirror position).

Additional features include: Very low power drive electronics (low heat emission), vertical or horizontal mounting, high frequency stability (to 0.05%), broad frequency selection, no wearing parts, shock and vibration tolerant.

Motion Control Application- Maxon Is A Part of NASA’s InSight Mission!

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – The InSight probe landed on Mars to shed new light on the formation of rocky planets. The mission entails driving a measuring probe five meters deep into the Martian ground. maxon engineers pulled out all the stops to make their motor fit for the job.

Tension was mounting among fans of space exploration, as the robotic InSight probe landed on Mars on November 26. If all goes according to plan, the stationary lander will proceed to carry out various measurements over a period of two years and provide important insights into Mars and the formation of Earth. The mission is being conducted by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA.

DC motors from the Obwalden-based drive specialist maxon motor are also on board. A compact motor-gearhead combination with a diameter of 22 millimeters is used in the HP3 probe developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It is designed to determine the temperature profile of the planet. Specifically, the maxon drive is located in a rod-shaped penetrometer, nicknamed “the Mole” by the developers. This penetrometer is autonomously driven five meters into the ground. To achieve this, the motor tensions a spring with each revolution. The spring then releases with great force, executing a powerful downward punch. In this way, the “Mole” gradually burrows downwards – over a period of several weeks, pulling along a cable that is equipped with sensors to help the researchers determine the thermal state of the interior of Mars and draw conclusions about its origin. Since Mars is a rocky planet like Earth, the scientific results may also help gain a better understanding of our own planet.

Special solution for more than 400 g

Mars is not a very friendly environment for technology. Nonetheless, more than a hundred maxon drives have already proven their worth on the Red Planet. The current InSight mission, however, posed additional challenges for the Swiss engineers. To efficiently drive the penetrometer into the ground, the DC motor needs to withstand forces in excess of 400 g – and more than 100,000 times. It took a number of variations and failed tests to find the right solution. The result is a standard DCX 22 motor, greatly modified with additional welding rings, bearing welds and specially shortened brushes. The utilized GP 22 HD gearhead, on the other hand, only needed Mars-specific lubrication.

Say hello to an old acquaintance

The InSight probe is powered by two solar panels for the duration of its mission. To save costs, JPL repurposed designs from the successful Phoenix mission, using a maxon DC motor developed some time ago to extend the solar panels. This type of motor, an RE 25, has ensured that NASA’s Opportunity rover has been active on Mars for more than 14 years (even if it is currently in deep sleep due to a sandstorm). Thus, two generations of maxon drives come together in the InSight robot probe to jointly contribute to the mission’s success.

Motion Control – Linear Focus Actuator from Equipment Solutions

Forestville, CA, —The LFA-1205 Linear Focus Actuator is a high performance compact positioning system.  It was specifically developed for optical applications requiring both high precision and high-speed positioning over a short to medium stroke.  The LFA-1205 is well suited for optical focusing and other micropositioning applications such as scanning interferometry, surface structure analysis, disk drive testing, autofocus systems, confocal microscopy, bio-technology, semiconductor test equipment.  Note that this motor is normally configured with an analog position feedback sensor and can be optionally equipped with a digital quadrature feedback element.    The key to this products immense success is its novel tubular architecture.  This arrangement provides a means to send the optical path directly through the middle of the motor.  The moving optic attached to the motors ‘C-mount’ is not cantilevered and so has no torques.  The LFA-1205 Linear Focus Actuator is directly compatible with the SCA814 Servo Controlled Amplifier.

By design, the LFA-1205 Linear Focus Actuator rotates approximately 0.1 degrees or 1.7 milliradians for every 1 millimeter of translation.  Through manufacturing tolerances only there can be a small amount of pitch and roll motion that is induced during the intended translation.  These small but real error sources are routinely characterized during the manufacturing process  using our AC400 Digital Autocollimator to control product uniformity.

The LFA-2010 actuator has a 10 mm range of motion with <50 nanometer positioning repeatability, and a small step response of time of <3 milliseconds. Motion Control LFA-2010 Linear Focus Actuator

An important feature of this product is it’s innovative tubular architecture. This allows the 20 mm clear optical path to go directly through the middle of the motor. The patented dual ‘Flexures system’ has zero stiction/friction. For mounting optics a standard C-mount is provided, or an optional 12.7mm diameter lens socket. The C-mount provides options for adapters to common microscope objectives like DIN or M25 or M26. The LFA-2010 Linear Focus Actuator is well suited for optical focusing and other micropositioning applications such as scanning interferometry, surface structure analysis, disk drive testing, autofocus systems, confocal microscopy, biotechnology, and semiconductor test equipment.

The LFA-2010 Linear Focus Actuator can be supplied “Plug-and-Play,” with the SCA814 Servo Controlled Amplifier, a matching power supply, and necessary cabling for easy integration into new and existing applications.
